 Jessica was one of eight Tamworth High School students who travelled to Government House in Sydney last week. The Governor presented them with Order of Australia Certificates of Commendation for their achievements with Interact and community service organisations such as Reach Out and the Rural Fire Service.

Guest speaker, Terry McGowen, gave an interesting insight into his career path from the navy, earthmoving industry and trucking industry through to his present-day occupation of Westpac Rescue helicopter pilot. Four fulltime aircrew are based in Tamworth to operate the Bell 407 helicopter which is valued at US $1.5 million.

In her personal profile, Paula Peterson revealed that she is a natural blond; a long-standing Tamworth resident; has been involved in the travel industry since school; and has been overseas 52 times. Most revealing was her description of her first wedding anniversary where her husband, David, on return to the motel room after dinner, spent the next two hours playing with the golf clubs she had surprised him with! Paula is a "tell it as it is" person whose philosophy is to "keep smiling".

John Trollor presented a banner from the Foundation to past president, Bill Moss, in recognition of the club’s achievement of being the district’s highest donor per capita to the Rotary Foundation in the past Rotary year.

Paula Peterson arrived in time to distribute an array of bandannas amongst the members as part of National Bandanna Day. At $2 each, the money raised goes to support CanTeen – the Australian Teenage Cancer Patients’ Society. Paula did her best to instruct members on how to fit the bandannas, creating a scene akin to small children trying to tie their shoelaces for the first time.

Guest speaker, Neville Hall, described the Seniors Computer Club as "seniors helping seniors use and enjoy computers". The Tamworth Club has 78 members, 51 of whom are being trained to use computers by volunteer members of the Club. The aim is to create a new breed of "techno-seniors". In 1999, 10% of people over 65 years of age were regular internet users compared to 56% of people in the 35-54 age group. Computer use by over 65s doubled from 1990 to 1997.
